Size calculator
Which size is your dog?
Coats are sized by back length, not by breed or weight. Thirty seconds with a tape measure is the difference between a coat that fits and a return.
Measure along the spine from the base of the neck, where the collar sits, to the base of the tail. See the full size chart
| Size | Back length | Chest up to | Often fits |
|---|---|---|---|
| XXS | 20 to 26 cm | 36 cm | Chihuahuas, toy poodles |
| XS | 26 to 32 cm | 44 cm | Miniature dachshunds, Yorkshire terriers |
| S | 32 to 40 cm | 54 cm | Jack Russells, border terriers |
| M | 40 to 48 cm | 64 cm | Cocker spaniels, whippets, beagles |
| L | 48 to 58 cm | 76 cm | Border collies, springer spaniels |
| XL | 58 to 70 cm | 90 cm | Labradors, golden retrievers |
Jumpers and fleeces run XXS to L; collars, snoods and the boot mat have their own sizes on the product page. Unusual shape, or still not sure? Send us the measurements before you order.

Built for the weather we actually get
- Cut for a dog's shape, long in the back and short under the belly
- Goes over a harness, with an opening on the back for the lead
- Reflective edges for dark mornings and evenings
- Made to be mended, with replacement buckles and straps
Not sure where to start? Read the size guide.

Made to be mended
A coat that lasts ten winters beats one that looks good for two. Every Tarnhound coat is put together so a buckle, a strap or a zip can be replaced, and we will replace it for you.
Worn out is fine. Thrown out is not.
Kit that lives by the door
The coats, harnesses and leads share one palette of moss, slate, rust and peat, so they go together without trying.
Hang it up wet tonight, grab it tomorrow on the way out.
Questions before you order
How do I measure my dog?
Stand your dog square and run a soft tape along the spine, from the base of the neck where the collar sits to the base of the tail. Leave the tail out. That number is the back length, and it is the one every Tarnhound size is built on.
If your dog lands exactly on the line between two sizes, take the larger one.
Will a coat go over a harness?
Yes. The Fell Coat, the Tarn Parka, the Drizzle Jacket and the Cooling Vest all have an opening on the back for the lead, so the harness goes on first and the coat goes over it.
What if it does not fit?
Send it back unworn, with the tags on, within 30 days and we swap the size or refund it. Measuring first is still quicker than a return.
How do I wash it?
Coats and fleece: a cool machine wash, no fabric softener, hang to dry. Knitwear: hand wash cool and dry flat. Each product page has the detail.
How much is delivery?
UK delivery is free over £60 and £4.50 below that. Orders go out by tracked courier within two working days.
